• Chondrus crispus (Irish Moss) is an edible seaweed that grows below the tideline on rocky terrain along the coast of Maine. It is the source of carageenan, a thickening additive for foods. If you've eaten ice cream, you've probably eaten Irish Moss! This specimen was washed ashore at Bracy Cove.

 • Hidden among deep piles of wrack along the high tide line I found a decomposing sea bird. There wasn't enough left to identify it, but perhaps someday I'll learn enough to recognize these feathers.

 • In the winter I beachcomb alone, but in the summer, it's a family affair. Lamoine Beach didn't have enough sand to make my daughter happy, nor enough waves and climbing rocks to please my son. Beachcombing wasn't too bad, but I didn't have long there.
It’s amazing what you can read from these fragments: 1950s Syracuse china, much older Bavarian porcelain, dark green bottle glass from the mid-1800s, and mid-20th century Coke bottle fragments.

 • The day was overcast and damp, about 42ºF with a brisk offshore wind out of the north. Occasional shafts of sunlight would break through and shimmer briefly on the wet stones. The gulls, my winter companions, weren't as raucous as usual, but creaky, like old doors.
• On January 1, I climbed down the snow-covered rocks to spend a lovely half hour on the frozen beach. I had recently finished Curtis Ebbesmeyer's book, Flotsametrics, an account of how the author helped map the the great gyres that drive debris around the oceans, which piqued my interest in trash.
• I spend hours picking up stones on cobble beaches, admiring the patterns, looking for stripes, feeling the difference between coarse- and fine-grained granite, and trying to imagine the geological processes and depth of time require to produce them.
