Laver (Porphyra umbilicalis) is an edible seaweed that grows below the tideline on rocky shores around Mount Desert Island. A similar species is used to make nori in Japan. That's the seaweed used for sushi rolls. It is usually reddish - this specimen was bleached by the winter cold. If you look closely, you'll see it is growing on the back of a Common Periwinkle's shell (Littorina littorea). Seaweed and snail went back into the ocean after being photographed.
