On January 1, I climbed down the snow-covered rocks to spend a lovely half hour on the frozen beach. I had recently finished Curtis Ebbesmeyer's book, Flotsametrics, an account of how the author helped map the the great gyres that drive debris around the oceans, which piqued my interest in trash.
Beach china, Dog Whelk (Nucella lapillus), sea glass, Razor Clam (Ensis directus), lobster-claw band, driftwood, plastic, Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis), acorn, Common Periwinkle (Littorina littorea), Green Crab (Carcinus maenas), brick, beach-pea pod, Northern Rock Barnacle (Balanus balanoides), peach pit, and Waved Whelk (Buccinum undatum).
